تناولت رغدة نحّاس الزين، في كتابها هذا، شخصيّةً إصلاحيَّةً من جبل عامل في حقبةٍ كان بعض رجال الدين فيها قوّةَ تحديثٍ لا قوّةً ظلاميّة، على حدّ قول الكاتبة. وقد برز اسم الشيخ أحمد عارف الزين من خلال مجلّته العرفان التي أسّسها في صيدا العام 1909. فكانت المجلّة الأولى التي تصدر في البيئة الشيعيّة في جبل عامل ومثّلت دورًا أساسيًّا على مدّة أربعة عقود في انفتاح هذه البيئة الريفيّة المعزولة على التطورات الفكرّية والعلميّة والسياسيّة على محيطها القريب والبعيد.
تضمّن الكتاب مقدّمة وأربعة فصولٍ وخاتمة. تناولت الكاتبة في الفصول الأربعة حياة الشيخ الزين وآثاره ومجلّته ثمّ فكره التربويّ والاجتماعيّ والثقافيّ. وأخيرًا فكره الدينيّ والاقتصاديّ والسياسيّ. وعرضت الكاتبة في الخاتمة أبرز أفكار الشيخ الزين الإصلاحيّة التي وصلت إليها نتائج الدراسة ومنها: تركيز الشيخ الزين على التربية والتعليم من أجل الوصول الى التحرّر الفكريّ والسياسيّ؛ اهتمامه بالإصلاح اللغويّ معتبرًا أن الحفاظ على اللغة هو حفاظٌ على الهويّة؛ إهتمامه بالمرأة والدعوة الى تعليمها؛ نهجه الدينيّ الإصلاحيّ ودعوته إلى التقريب بين المذاهب الإسلاميّة المختلفة وإيمانه بوحدة الأديان في الجوهر.
