"أوفرِد" هي جارية في "جمهورية جلعاد"، تخدم في منزل "الرئيس" الغامض وزوجته حادّة الطّباع، تخرج مرة واحدة يوميّاً إلى الأسواق، حيث استُبدلت الصّور بكلّ اللافتات المكتوبة، فالنساء في جلعاد تحرّم عليهن القراءة.
يجب عليها أن تصلي من أجل أن يجعلها الرّئيس حاملاً، ففي زمنها انخفضت معدّلات الولادة حتى صار وجود الأطفال في البيوت أمراً نادراً، وهكذا باتت قيمة المرأة تكمن في قُدرتها على الحمل، أمّا فشلها فيعني إرسالها إلى المستعمرات لتنظيف النفايات الإشعاعيّة، تتذكر أوفرد الأوقات التي عاشتها مع زوجها وابنتها، وفي وظيفتها، قبل أن تسلبها الثورة حتى اسمها الحقيقي.
رواية تُعتبر في مصافّ رواية جورج أورويل "1984" وآلدوس هكسلي "عالم جديد شجاع"، إذ لم تترك بصمتها وحسب في أدب الدستوبيا، بل وشكّلت تحذيراً لمُستقبل يُحتمل وقوعه، ونشعر الآن برعشة برودته.
