هذا الكتاب أحاديث مطوية أدلى بها المفكر العملاق والأديب "ميخائيل نعيمة" مع المؤلف "إسكندر داغر" في فترات متقطعة توزعت على مدى عشرين سنة من حياته، قبل رحيله عن الدنيا، وهي أربع مقابلات، أجرى المقابلة الأولى في سنة 1965، والمقابلة الثانية، سنة 1967، والمقابلة الثالثة في سنة 1980، والمقابلة الرابعة سنة 1984م. وفي سنة 1993، وبعد سنوات على رحيل ميخائيل نعيمة، التقى المؤلف بإبن أخيه الدكتور نديم نعيمة الذي لازمه ردحاً من الزمن وعرفه جيداً، سأله عن اللحظات الأخيرة في حياة عمه، فكانت محاورة بعنوان "كلمات نعيمة الأخيرة قبل رحيله. وهكذا، يقول المؤلف: عدت أخيراً، إلى هذه الأحاديث التي أصبحت شبه مجهولة، فقررت أن أجمعها في كتاب، لعلها تضيء على جوانب جديدة في مسيرة ميخائيل نعيمة الأدبية والحياتية، لربما لا نجدها في كتاباته الكثيرة .. وهي على كل حال، تشكل جزءاً لا يتجزأ من تراثه الفكري المبدع.
يبدأ الكتاب بمقال طويل كتبه المؤلف في سنة 1986 في الأسبوع العربي، وجعله بمثابة مقدمة جاءت تحت عنوان "شيخوخة هادئة على أنغام بيتهوفن"، ومن ثم، توالت الأحاديث الواحد تلو الآخر.
