بوبليوس فرجيليوس مارو، ولد في مانتوا شمال إيطاليا عام 70 قبل الميلاد وتوفي سنة 19م.
وكانت له علاقات صداقة رائعة خاصة مع اكتافيوس الذي أصبح فيما بعد الإمبراطور الأول أوغستوس.
وقد رافق الإمبراطور سنة 19م في رحلة إلى بلاد اليونان ولكن صحته كانت ضعيفة جداً ما اضطره إلى العودة إلى وطنه حيث توفي في برندزي أثناء عودته.
لقد كان فرجيليو "فرجيل" أثيراً عند دانتي ووقع إختياره عليه مفضلاً إياه بسبب علاقاته بالإمبراطورية الرومانية التي كانت العماد الذي يرتكز عيه دانتي في نظامه السياسي الأخلاقي.
