لقد استعرض الإنسان أشكال عديدة ومتنوعة من القدرات الإستثنائية الموثّقة عن التاريخ، وهذه الحالات ليست نادرة بل مألوفة في كل مكان وزمان، لكنها كانت تتجلى بأشكال ومظاهر مختلفة حسب إختلاف المعتقد والثقافة التي تفرضها البيئة الإجتماعية القائمة.
كل مجموعة بشرية تنظر إلى هذه الظواهر الإستثنائية من منظور مختلف ورفق مفاهيم مختلفة؛ فالقدرات الإستثنائية التي يستعرضها اليوغي أو الناسك المتصوّف تختلف عن تلك التي يستعرضها الشاماني أو الساحر، وكلاهما يختلفان عن ما يستعرضه الوسيط الروحي، الذي يختلف بدوره عن الشخص الموهوب فطرياً.
جميعنا نقع في ذات الخطأ خلال تناول هذه الظواهر الإستثنائية لأننا ننظر إليها عبر نافذة الصيغ والمفاهيم الضيقة التي تفرضها المذاهب الروحية المختلفة خلال تعريفها للإنسان ونتجاهل الإنسان ذاته.
هذا التوجّه يؤدي بنا إلى الخروج بمجموعة من الصور الصُغرى التي تعجز عن وصف المشهد بالكامل الممثّل بالصورة الكبرى التي تشمل الفصيلة البشرية ككلّ.
مجرّد أن وجّهنا اهتمامنا نحو دراسة الإنسان بدلاً من المذاهب الروحية المختلفة التي تتناوله، ودققنا النظر في الطبيعة الحقيقية للكائن البشري وتعريفه بالإعتماد على المظاهر الرائعة التي يتمتع بها سوف نرى الحقيقة متجلية أمامنا بوضوح.
أوّل ما نكتشفه هو أن القدرات الإستثنائية ليست خارقة للطبيعة بل طبيعية وتنتمي إلى جوهر الكينونة البشرية، لكننا لا نستطيع إدراك هذه الحقيقة إلا بعد التحرر من قيود الصور الصُغرى التي تفرضها المعتقدات المحلية وننطلق إلى رحاب الصورة الكبرى التي توصف الفصيلة البشرية ككل.
