هذا كتاب ألفته فى غريب كلام العرب ولغاتها، واقتصرت فيه على كل كلمة وتفسيرها، دون أسماء النقلة، والاستشهاد بالقرآن والاثار، والأمثال والأشعار، التى أثبتها فى الكتاب المنضد الذى اختصر هذا منه، ليخف محمله، ويسهل تعلمه، وضممت كل حرف إلى جنسه، وكل لفظ إلى شبهه، وجعلته ثمانية وعشرين بابا على حروف الهجاء وجعلت فى كل باب من أنوابه ثمانية وعشرين فصلاً، لتوجد البغية منه وشيكة بلا تعب ولا نصب، ولا مشقة ولا كبير طلب. فصوله: سبع مائه وأريعة وثمنون فصلا ومهلمها: مائة وواحد وثلاثة وخمسون فصلا، وذكرت ما استعملته منهاما أحاط به علمى، واتقنه فهمى، ولم آل فى ذلك حرصا، واجتهاداً، وتتبعا، وانتقاء، على حسب الطاقة والإمكان، وبالله التوفيق، وهو المستعان، ومنه التسد ، وعليه التكلان.
