كان عبد الله بن بلقين بن باديس بن حبوس بن زيرى الملك الثالث والأخير لمملكة غرناطة التى أسسها فرع منحدر من عائلة بني زيرى البربرية الصنهاجية، وذلك بعد سقوط الخلافة الأموية بقرطبة.
أما كتابة عبد الله لمذكراته، فقد كانت اثناء إقامته الإجبارية في آغمات. وإن هذه الترجمة الشخصية تكون أعظم مجموعة وثائق نملكها عن تأريخ ملوك الطوائف وأقلها تحويرا، كما نستطيع ان ندرك ذلك بسهولة. وعلى الرغم من الاستطرادات الطيولة التى يحاول فيها المؤلفان يبرر موقفه السياسي امام الأخطار التى كانت تهدم مملكته، فإن كتاب "التبيان" يقدم لنا سردا مفصلا جدا لجميع الحوادث التى أدت إلى استيلاء ألفونش السادس على مدينة طليطلة عام 478 (1085)وإلى تدخل المرابطين في شبة جزيرة إبريا في السنة التالية.
كما ان مذكرات عبد الله هى وثيقة سيكولوجية من الطراز الأول، يساعد بصورة أفضل من كتب التأريخ التى ألفت من بعد، على الحكم على حالة الانحلال الاجتماعي والسياسي في الأندلس قبل معركة الزلاقة وبعدها، وعلى التقدم الذي حققه في هذا الوقت أنصار استرجاع اسبانيا المسلمة إلى النصرانية. ومن جهة اخرى، إن قص الحوادث السابقة على حكم الأمير عبد الله نفسه هو أيضا أمر جديد وهام جدا.
