قاموس لونغمان الأول للتعلم ضرب جديد من القواميس يقصد به مساعدة الطلاب على تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية بصورة مجدية، يشتمل هذا القاموس على الكلمات الإنجليزية الألفين والخمسمائة (2500) التي لا غنى للطالب عنها في البداية، وقد جرى تحليل فاحص لكتب تعليم الإنجليزية وذلك للوثوق من أن جميع الكلمات الإنجليزية المستعملة أكثر ما يكون قد أدرجت في هذا القاموس.
وقد استعين في وضع قاموس لونغمان الأول للتعلم بمبدأ جديد كل الجدة، وهو أن الكلمات الأساسية الأولى التي يتعلمها الطالب بادئ ذي بدء قد عرفت فيه وحددت معانيها بصورة سهلة مع استعماله الأمثلة المفسرة الواضحة ومع الصور عادة. وهذا الأسلوب يوضح استعمال كل كلمة بطريقة سهلة المنال ذات نفع عظيم جداً للمبتدئين.
وفي قاموس لونغمان الأول للتعلم طريق أخرى ينتفع الطالب بها، ومن ذلك: أولاً: إن جميع التعريفات والأمثلة موضوعة في عبارات سهلة جداً، بحيث إن الطالب إذا انفرد بنفسه في التعلم يستطيع فهمها تماماً. ثانياً: وإن الأمثلة موضوعة بحيث يتبين منها كيفية استعمال الكلمة الإنجليزية بمعناها المراد، وبذلك يتسنى للطالب دليل يسترشد به في تركيب الجمل والعبارات الإنجليزية العادية. ثالثاً: وإن العبارات والصور التمثيلية واضحة جذابة، تساعد الطالب على فهم ما تعنيه الكلمة وتذكره به كما تساعده على فهم السياق أو المقام الذي تقال فيه الكلمة وتذكره به.
