إنّ لــ "لاميَّة العرب" للشَّنفرى مكانة كبيرة في الشعر العربي، وهي قصيدةٌ لم تصدر إلاّ عن شاعر أصيل، ومن ثَمّ لقيت عناية علماء العربية قديماً وحديثاً قلّ أن نالت مثلَها قصيدةٌ، فشرحها كلٌّ من: التبريزي (502هـ)، والزّمخشريّ (538هـ)، والعُكبَريِّ (616هـ)، وابن أبي طي النجار الغسّاني (630هـ)، وابن مالك الطائي النحوي (672هـ)، وأبي جمعة سعيد بن مسعود الماغوسي (1016هـ)، وابن زاكور الفاسي (1121هـ)، وعطاء الله المصري (1188هـ).
كما عُني بهذه القصيدة الماتعة كثير من المستشرقين، فنشرها غير واحد منهم عن أصول خطية مختلفة، وترجمها بعضهم إلى لغاتهم، ودرسها آخرون دراساتٍ واسعة لها.
فالشُّراح وجدوا فيها مادة لغوية ثرّة، وصوراً أدبيةً بديعةً ومعانيّ نفيسة، والمستشرقون رأوا فيها وثيقة متقنة لحياة الأعراب في جزيرة العرب في العصر الجاهلي، فاهتمامهم بها لغرض إجتماعي وتاريخي.
تقع القصيدة في (68) بيتاً من البحر الطويل.
ومن الجدير بالذكر أن عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه روي عنه أنّه قال: علّموا أولادكم قصيدةَ الشنفرى، فإنها تعلّمهم مكارمَ الأخلاق" فامتثالاً وإسهاماً في تحقيق هذا الهدف النبيل، وتعزيزاً لمكانة اللغة العربية، أردت أن أنشر هذه القصيدة مرفقةً بشرح موجز، ورسومات مصوَّرة تقرِّب المعاني إلى القارئ في خطوة غير مسبوقة، وقد جعلت بين يديها ترجمةً مقتضبة للشاعر.
