تعد خرائط التفكير أدوات تعليمية مكانية ملونة تسمح بتنظيم الحقائق والأفكار مثل الطريقة الطبيعية التي يعمل بها المخ عند البداية، وهذا يعني أن تذكر المعلومات وإستدعائها لاحقاً يعتبر أسهل وأكثر مصداقية من أساليب تدوين الملاحظات التقليدية.
وبما أن خرائط التفكير شبيهة جداً بخرائط الطرق، فهي أداة حادة لشحذ المخ تتيح للمستخدم التذكر بدقة ومرونة، وكذلك الإبتكار والتخطيط، والتفكير، والتعلم، والتواصل مع الآخرين إعتماداً على الذاكرة، فبينما المركز أهم فكرة عندك، فإن الطرق الأساسية التي تخرج من المركز أهم فكرة عندك، فإن الطرق الأساسية التي تخرج من المركز تمثل أهم الأفكار أثناء عملية التفكير، أما الطرق الثانوية، أو الفروع، فهي تمثل الأفكار وهكذا، أما الأشكال أو الصور الخاصة فتمثل مواقع أو أفكار مهمة.
ويعد هذا الكتاب بداية متواضعة لموضوع مهم يخدم شريحة كبيرة من التلاميذ والمعلمين والباحثين، حيث احتوى هذا الكتاب على تسعة فصول؛ تناول الفصل الأول (الدماغ وخرائط التفكير): المدخل إلى مفهوم الدماغ وأقسام الدماغ وحقائق عن المخ البشري والدماغ وخرائط التفكير، أما الفصل الثاني (خرائط المفاهيم) فقد تضمن، المدخل إلى مفهوم خرائط المفاهيم ومفهوم خرائط المفاهيم وأنواع خرائط المفاهيم وإستخدام خرائط المفاهيم وخصائص خرائط المفاهيم والفوائد التربوية.
وجاء الفصل الثالث يشرح (الخرائط الذهبية)، وتناول الفصل الرابع (الخرائط المعرفية)، أما الفصل الخامس (التفكير وخرائط التفكير) فقد احتوى برامج تعليم مهارات التفكير وخرائط التفكير وأهمية خرائط التفكير وأنواع خرائط التفكير.
وتضمن الفصل السادس (الذكاء المتعدد وعلاقته بخرائط التفكير) مشتملاً مدخل إلى مفهوم الذكاء المتعدد ونظرية الذكاء المتعدد ومفهوم الذكاءات المتعددة وإفتراضات نظرية الذكاء المتعدد والتطبيقات التربوية، أما الفصل السابع فتناول (العادات الدراسية وخرائط التفكير)، وجاء الفصل الثامن يشرح (أنموذج تطبيق خرائط التفكير في مختلف المواد الدراسية)، أما الفصل التاسع يشرح (نماذج خرائط التفكير) وتضمن ثلاثون خريطة للتفكير.
