إن لم يكن عالم الجن مرئياً فهو محسوس مسموع، تشهد الدلائل الكثيرة النقلية والعقلية له، ولا يجدد هذه الحقيقة إلا كافر زنديق أو ملحد فيلسوف. ختم الله على سمعه وبصره. وقد تعرض الهواتف لمن تطوح به الأسفار ويجتاز البراري والقفار، ويمر بالأطلال والقبور والديار، وكذلك من يدمن ارتياد الحمام والتخلي في الكنف والحشوش. وتزعم الأعراب أن الله عز وجل حين أهلك الأمة التي كانت تسمى وبَار أن الجن سكنت في منازلها وحمتها من كل من أرادها، فإذا أراد امرؤ الدنوّ من تلك البلاد حثت الجن في وجهه التراب سواء كان متعمداً أو غالطاً غير متعمد، فإن أبى الرجوع أصابوه بالخيال وربما قتلوه.
ويقال أن الجن تتحكك بالإنس فتصرع من يتطرق إلى مواطنهم أو تستهويه، وقد تقتله كما جرى مع الصحابى سعد بن عبادة الخزرجي، فقد زعموا أنه جلس يبول في نفق فمات من ساعته واخضر جلده. عن كل هذه الأخبار وغيرها كثير يتحدث "أبي الدنيا" في كتابه هذا الفريد في بابه، والذي يشتمل على أحاديث وأخبار عز نظيرها ساقها المؤلف بإسناده، في موضوع واحد إلا وهو "الهواتف ومخاطبة الجنة لبعض الناس" ومنها ما جرى لبعض الصحابة والتابعين، ومنها مع عرض للمتوحدين في القفار البسابس والمجتازين البيد الأمالس والمتهجدين في الصوامع والمارين بالأجداث والمقابر لا يخالف ذلك إلى غيره، فهذا ديدنه في كل مصنفاته، فكل كتاب من أبواب المواضيع مستقل... ونظراً لأهمية هذا الكتاب ولمكانة مؤلفه عني "محمد الزغلي" بتصنيفه معتنياً بتقديم ما اعترى النص من الخلل، وبتخريج الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة والحكم على كل حديث بالصحة أو الضعف.
