كان يشغلني كثيراً شيئان "سياحيان" الشئ الأول هو: كيف يرى السياح بلدنا، مصر؟ كيف ترى العين الأجنبية أو الأوروبية مصر؟ ، الشئ الثاني هو كيف نعامل نحن - الشعب المصري - السياح الأجانب في بلدنا؟! هل نعاملهلم على أنهم "صيدة" ومحفظة دولارات وإسترليني وماركات ينبغي أن نفرغها... فكرت في أن أقوم بدور السائح وأصل إلى مطار القاهرة كسائح وأسيح فعلاً لعدة أيام أفعل فيها كما يفعل السياح، وأترك نفسي لسائقي التاكسيات والترجمانات وعمال الفنادق وبائعي خان الخليلي وغيرهم، يفعلون بي ما يفعلونه مع السياح، لكن كيف أستطيع أن أقنعهم بأنني سائح وشعري الأكرت، وملامحي المصرية تماماً يفضحاني؟!
ونامت الفكرة سنوات عديدة، حتى قفزت إلى إمكانية فجأة في الربيع الماضي: صديقة إنجليزية حميمة إتصلت بي من لندن تليفونياً لتقول لي "حسين، أنا خلاص حاتجنن.. الشغل واخدني 16 ساعة في اليوم، حتى اكتشفت من كام يوم فقط أنني لم أحصل على أجازة واحدة ولم أسافر خارج إنجلترا ولا مرة منذ 3 سنوات.. وخلاص قررت أنني لازم آخذ أجازة طويلة في الصيف القادم.. وأنت دعوتني كثيراً لزيارة مصر وكنت دائماً أعتذر بظروف عملي وضيق وقتي، فإذا كانت دعوتك لي لازالت قائمة فهل ستستطيع أن تتحملني لمدة 4 أسابيع هذا الصيف؟ أجبتها وقد سطعت الفكرة في ذهني كشمس وسط النهار، فكيف لم أفكر في ذلك من قبل "أتحمللك وأتحمل أبوكي كمان.. على أن توافقي على أن أكتب رحلتك لمصر في مجلتي هنا"
