كان البعض يقولون إن مستر نحيف (أو اللورد تونتي) قد مات بسبب التخمة في ليلة حمراء مع جرعة زائدة من منشط غير جيد، والبعض الآخر يقول ساخرا إنه لم يحتمل إغلاق مصنع المنسوجات الكبير بعد هروب كرتلة بالأموال، وآخرون يقولون إن إنسانيته رَقَّتْ لحال عمال المصنع الذين تشرَّدوا بعد الإغلاق، والحقيقة هي أنه مات في لحظة صمت، دون مقدمات، هكذا كأنما هو ماكينة فرغ زيتُ وقودها، وانتهت معه المهابة والوقار الزائف وتصدع الخوف في قلوب الناس، وتبخرت الأطماعُ وقَلّتْ الأموالُ ونبتت الأقاويلُ كرؤوس الشياطين، ثم انطفأت وأصبحت أرملتُه شهوة وبناتُه الخمسُ رغبة، وعيناء، وحاشدة، وملعوبة، وفرعاء سِتَّ لعناتٍ خَفيَّاتٍ في المدينة".
