يعد السكري من الأمراض الشائعة والأكثر إنتشاراً في العالم فيصيب الكبار والصغار، فهو متلازمة إضطراب الطاقة الناجم عن الإنسولين أو نقص فعاليته والذي ينتج منه عمليات حيوية غير طبيعية للكربوهيدرات والبروتينات والدهون.
تأكد لدى الباحثة أن الاطفال المصابين بالسكري لديهم تدني في مفهوم الذات من خلال إستبيان وزع على بعض أمهات ومعلمات أطفال الروضة وأطباء مرضى السكر حيث تضمن الإجابة على السؤال الآتي (هل تعتقدين وتعتقد بأن الأطفال المصابين بالسكري يعانون تدني مفهوم الذات؟).
فضلاً عن ذلك، فإن إحساس الباحثة بالمشكلة جاء من خلال ملاحظة بعض الأطفال المصابين بالسكري في الروضة من خلال عملها كمعلمة روضة ومديرة في سنوات سابقة حيث يجب التقييد بنظام غذائي خاص.
وهذا يدعو الأهل إلى منع الأطفال او الطفل المصاب بالسكري من تناول أطعمة تضره وهم يحاولون مع الطبيب مساعدة الطفل على أن يحيا حياة طبيعية ومساعدته على أن ينمو نمواً طبيعياً، جسمياً وعقلياً ونفسياً، كما يجب أن يتعلم الطفل المصاب بالسكري عدم الإفراط في تناول المواد السكرية والنشوية، وتعليمه كيفية حقن نفسه، وتوعيته بصورة كاملة بهذا المرض، فضلاً عن إصابة الباحثة نفسها بالسكري منذ الطفولة كل ذلك يظهر مشكلة البحث الحالي في (هناك أطفال مصابون بالسكري يعانون تدني مفهوم الذات، فهل لبرنامج إرشادي أثر في خفض تدني مفهوم الذات؟).
