في بحر التعاليم التي تحتوي عليها شهادة الإيمان، تحتلّ القرارات المتعلّقة بالتعليم مكاناً خاصّاً، فقد تظهر في حياة المؤمن الفرد أو في مسلك الجماعة وفهمها، أو في نطاق الكنيسة الإقليميّة أو الجامعة أحوال شاذّة وعوامل تهدّد الإيمان.
هذا يتطلّب حصول حكم واضح في النظرة المعنيّة أو المسلك المعنيّ، هل هما مطابقان للإنجيل أم لا، والتقليد المسيحي الكاثوليكيّ يقرّر أنّ الدين يرجع إليهم الحكم في ذلك هم البابا والأساقفة بصفتهم رعاة الكنيسة، وهذه الصلاحيّة تتعلّق بقضايا الإيمان والسلوك.
والقرارات التعليميّة تستند إلى الشهادات الإيمانيَّة النابعة من المراجع ذات السلطة، ولها أهميّة كبيرة بالنسبة إلى الفهم الصحيح لمحتوى الإيمان، إذ هي عادةً تعبّر عن بصيرة فَطِنة وأحكام رصينة.
ونحن نجد في هذا الكتاب مجموعة من مثل هذه القرارات التعليميّة، ويجدر بالذكر أنّ هذه القرارات لا يجوز إعتبارها مماثلة للتبشير العامّ بالإنجيل، ولا تحتلّ محلّ هذه البشارة، بل هي توضّحها وتكمّلها في بعض النواحي الخاصّة، ولكنّها تبقى مختلفةً بعضها عن بعض في الوزن والسلطة والإلزام.
