لقد حوصر العربُ وثقافتهم بعد أحداث الحادي عشر من أيلول، فلا تكادُ تُلفظُ كلمة "إرهابي"، إلّا مشفوعةً بكلمةِ "عربي" أو "مسلم".
ولم يُنقذ العربَ وثقافتهم استنجادُهم بكلّ رموز التسامحِ في تاريخهم، ولا دعوتُهم المستميتة إلى الحوار، والإنفتاح، والتعايش.
لقد أصدرت أمريكا بحقِّهم عقوبة الإلغاءِ أو التلاشي، وشرعت تنفّذها منذ لحظة صدور الحكم.
ويذكر الدكتور هشام مصباح أن الرئيس الأمريكي "جورج بوش" بعد أن شاهد فيلماً يُصوِّر العالمَ قد دُمِّرَ، وانطلقت منه سفينة فضاء تحمل الباقين، وتنطلق إلى المستقبل، علّق أحد المصاحبين للرئيس بأنَّ السفينة تخلو من العرب، فردّ الرئيس مازحاً: هذا هو المستقبل.
فهل ستتحقّق نبوءةُ "بوش" السوداء؟ وما دور الثقافة في دحضهِا أو تحقّقها؟ علينا أن نتذكّر في هذا السياق أن العوامل الخارجية وحدَها لا تستطيع مهما تعاظمت أن تُلغي أمَّةً ما، فانتصار الأُمّة أو هزيمتها أمران مرهونان بعواملها الذاتية الداخليّة أوّلاً، وبقدرتها على تحدّي هذه العوامل الخارجيّة أو الإستجابة لها على وفق ما انتهى إليه "آرنولد توينبي" في نظريّة التحدّي والإستجابة.
