الرياضيات فعاّلة من دون أيّ شكّ في حلّ مسائل بالغة التعقيد ظاهريّاً. يتمّ تحقيق هذه الإجرائيّة في ثلاث خطوات: نمذجة مسألة العالَم الخارجي كمسألة رياضيّة، ثم حلّ المسألة الرياضيّة وأخيراً تفسير النتائج. بالرغم من التغيّرات الحديثة بفضل جهود شركات COMP, SIAM, NSA، فإن التوسيعات الخاصّة للرياضيات مفيدة في المسائل الصناعيّة مثل تحويل "زد"، وتحويل "لابلاس" ومخطّطات "بود". لذا يتوجّب على الصناعيين أن يكونوا قادرين على رؤية عملهم من وجهة نظر اقتصاديّة.
يبتدئ كلّ فصلٍ من هذا الكتاب بمراجعة وجيزة لبعض الرياضيات ذات العلاقة. ثم يقدِّم شرحاً أوفى يتعلّق بالصناعة للمادّة قيد الدراسة من خلال تطبيقاتٍ نمطيّة. لا تُعَدّ المساقات الواردة ضمن جريان النصّ مجرّدَ وسائلَ إغناءٍ، بل إنها جزء متكامِل من النصّ نفسه. تكمن إحدى أهم نقاط القوة في الكتاب أنه يبيِّن قوّةَ مزج الطرائق التحليليّة بالحاسوبيّة خلال حلّ المسائل.
