كتاب الصحاح، هو من أشهر كتب الجوهري، وقد نال شهرة عظيمة ومكانة سامية بين علماء اللغة، وفيه يقول محمد إسماعيل بن عبدوس النيسابوري:
هذا كتاب الصحاح سيد ما... صنف قبل الصحاح في الأدب
تشمل أبوابه وتجمع ما... فرق في غيره من الكتب
وكان لما خرج الصحاح إلى النور أقبل عليه العلماء يثنون عليه أو يضعون له الحواشي أو يختصرونه أو ينقدونه أو يدافعون عنه، أما عن عملنا في هذا الكتاب، فكان أن، (قمنا أولاً: بتغير نظام ترتيب المواد في المعجم من ترتيب القافية إلى الترتيب الهجائي، ثانياً: قمنا بتشكيل المواد والألفاظ المشكلة على القارئ، ثالثاً: خرجنا الآيات القرآنية، رابعاً: قمنا بتوضيح القراءات ووضعها بين قوسين تمييزاً لها عن قراءة حفص، خامساً: قمنا بتحمير اشتقاقات المادة لتسهيل العثور عليها للباحث، سادساً: ميزنا الأحاديث والأمثال بوضعها بين قوسين، سابعاً: بينا بحور الأبيات قبيل كل بيت، باستثناء (قال الراجز)؛ لأنه من بحر الرجز بالضرورة، ثامناً: حينما يحيل المؤلف المادة على موضع ما باعتبار ترتيب القافية؛ فإننا أحلناه بدورنا على الترتيب الهجائي الذي اعتمدناه، وذلك بوضع هامش عند ذلك الموضع، تاسعاً: قمنا باستكمال أغلب الأبيات والتنبيه على ذلك بوضعها بين معكوفين، عاشراً: عند تعارض ضبطين في كلمة ما بين نسختين فقد رجحنا بينهما بعد البحث والإطلاع، الحادي عشر: قدمنا للكتاب بمقدمة لاغنى عنها لكل من يطالع هذا الكتاب)، وقد قال الجوهري مؤلفه عنه في مقدمته "إني قد أودعت في هذا الكتاب ما صح عندي من هذه اللغة التي شرف الله منزلتها، وجعل علم الدين والدنيا منوطاً بمعرفتها، على ترتيب لم أسبق إليه، وتهذيب لم أغلب عليه في ثمانية وعشرين باباً، وكل باب منها ثمانية وعشرون فصلاً على عدد حروف المعجم وترتيبها، إلا أ، يهمل من الأبواب جنس من الفصول، بعد تحصيلها بالعراق رواية، وإتقانها دراية، ومشافهتي بها العرب العاربة في ديارهم بالبادية، ولم آل في ذلك نصحاً، ولا ادخرت وسعاً، نفعنا الله وإياكم به آمين".
