كان يشبه تلك الشخصيات التي يصادفها القارئ في روايات (دوستويفسكي) حينما يبلغ إحساسه بالمعاناة أقصى مداه كما لو كان في رواية (الجريمة والعقاب) يصل إلى الفكرة (الدوستويفسكية): انغماسه في المعاناة، قبوله العالم قبولاً مرضياً، في الوقت الذي كان يفعل ذلك احتجاجاً عليه. ضميره المرتاح، لكنه الضمير الذي يستمد راحته من اعتقاده من عدم وجود أي ضمير مرتاح. روحه المعقدة كون الشر عنصرها الجوعري، وعيه العميق، وكفاف إرادته وشعوره عن المسؤولية بالوجود. غرقه في لا وعيه بحيث لم يعد هناك مجالاً للوجود، وابتهاجه بصراعاته الداخلية العميقة. باختصار: يأسه واصطدامه بطريق مسدود.
لذلك ترك نفسه عرضة للخيبة حيال واقع يبدو محبطاً، واهتدى إلى أن في وسع مخيلته أن تصور له ما يريد في مشاهد لا تنتهي. هذا العاشق الأفلاطوني المتاسمي الذي لم يلتق يوماً بموضوع حبه، والذي تمتع بنوع من الرؤية أهلته لأن يكتشف أعمق ما في نفسه. أن يتعرفها على غرار (أوديب) الذي تكشفت له ذاته مرة واحدة وبعمق، ليكتشف أنه قتل أباه وتزوج أمه وأنه حاكم المدينة. هي معرفة تتضمن خطر الجنون، معرفة حادة ومريعة، اكتشاف ما من إنسان يستطيع أن يتحملها.
