في مطار الكويت تبدأ أحداث القصة، حيث يرصد المؤلف إضافة إلى انفعالات رفاق الرحلة، ما تركه الغزو العراقي للكويت من آثار مادية ونفسية، البطل يعمل محاسباً في إحدى الشركات بهد أن كان ضابطاً في القوات المسلحة، وهو مثل آلاف المصريين الذين هاجروا إلى الخليج العربي وهي بلاد بعيدة لكنها قريبة جداً من الشمس. هناك حيث تشابكت الظروف ليجد البطل نفسه في مواقف هي مزيج من المواقف الإنسانية قبل أن يقرر السفر إلى الجنوب الإفريقي لإنجاز صفقة والعودة بمائة كيلو جرام ذهب، لكن الشركة التي تعاقد معها شحنت له رملاً بدل الذهب المتفق عليه.
وأطراف اللعبة بدأت في الظهور بإبراهيم الطيب الشخص السوداني الذي يطرد من الكويت بسبب الغزو فيكون حلقة وصل مع صاحب المنجم الذي يوهم الجميع أن حكومة بلاده لا تسمح بخروج كميات كبيرة من الذهب، وأنه يعرض استيلاء مائة كيلوغرام من الذهب مقابل سداد عشرة بالمائة من قيمته فقط والباقي يسدد بعد بيع الذهب.
