يبحث هذا الكتاب التحولاتِ التي طرأت على فكرة المادة، في القرنين السابع عشر والثامن عشر، فلقد خِيضت - إبان تلك الفترة - معارك ثقافية حول طبيعة الواقع، في أرجاء أوروبا كافة.
وكانت تلك المعارك جزءاً لا يتجزأ من الحَراك الثقافي، الذي تمخّض عن "عصر التنوير"، ويُبَيّن الكتاب إسهامَ الكيميائيين في خطاب التنوير عبر إعادة تعريف عناصر الطبيعة، ونفي الأبعاد الغيبية عنها.
ولقد استتبع ذلك تغيُّرُ معرفيٌّ مهمِّ جرى في الثقافة الأوروبية، أفضى إلى تشكُّل نظام الكيمياء الحديث، فحين يُعاد تعريف المادة، وتُمنح حدوداً جديدة، تتغير الأفكار المتعلقة باللاماديّ، والعالم الروحي، وتنتقل إلى فضاءٍ آخر.
لقد أفضت السيرورة التاريخيّة للنظر في المعادن وتفصحها - في ذلك الوقت - إلى إنفصال الكيمياء عن الممارسات غير العلميَّة، المتمثلة في جملة من تقاليد الخيمياء والسيمياء السابقة.
ويركز هذا الكتاب على "مديرية المناجم السويدية"، والممارسات المعرفية التي طبَّقتها، محدِثةً إختلافها في السياق الأوروبيّ.
ويتتبع - كذلك - سِيَرَ الرحَّالة من طلاب المعرفة التعدينية، الذين أوفدتهم المديرية، وما رووه في تقاريرهم ومراسلاتهم وكتبهم، ويتناول الكتاب الجدل الدائر في الاوساط العلمية السويدية، وإنتصار تغليب المنفعة المادية على ما دونها في نهاية الأمر، وهو ما يعيد - من زاوية - تعريف التنوير، بوصفه خطاباً نفعياً في جوهره، بخلاف الصورة النمطية السائدة عنه، أنه ثورة عقلية وثقافية ضد الجهول والغيبيات فحسب.
