ليس هناك "استبداد شرقي" او "استبداد غربي"، لكن هناك استبداد بل استبداد بشع في الشرق كما في الغرب. هذا هو الاستنتاج المحوري الذي يسعى إلى إثباته هذا الكتاب محاولا تعميق الجدل حول مفهومي “الاستبداد” و”الاستبداد الشرقي”، منها ان السلطة الاستبدادية تتضارب بجوهرها مع "جوهر" الانسان الذي هو الحرية. وان الاستبداد هو تعبير عن لحظة اضطراب في بنية وحياة المجتمع او الامة. وان تسميات "الاستبداد العادل" و "الاستبداد المتنور" و"الاستبداد الوطني" و"الاستبداد المؤمن" و"الاستبداد الثوري" هي توصيفات فارغة لا تنفي المضمون الطغياني للنظام الدالة عليه. وان من الوهم القول ان الدولة الاستبدادية يمكن ان تحمي بعض الحريات والحقوق، وبالتالي من الوهم القول بعلاقة قدرية بين الشرق والاستبداد او بين آسيا والعبودية، او افتراض علاقة قدرية بين الغرب والديمقراطية او بين اوربا والحرية. واستطراداً، ليس هناك "تعصب اسلامي" او "تسامح مسيحي" او بالعكس. لأن الايديولوجيات الدينية تحديداً، وليس الدين بذاته، ما جعل تاريخ السلطة في الشرق لوحة من الحكومات الاستبدادية كما جعل تاريخ السلطة في الغرب المسيحي حتى الثورة الفرنسية في الاقل، لوحة حافلة بانظمة الاستبداد المطلق. ونفس الاستنتاج يصدق على العوالم اليهودية والهندوسية وكافة الديانات الاخرى دون استثناء.
