تهيّبت وأنا أضع أمامي هذا السفر الضخم، لكن ما إن دخلت عالم أوجي مارش حتى راحت متعة قراءة هذه الرواية تأسرني، إنها رواية إجتماعية فلسفية تسائل معنى الحياة وتتميز بالفرادة في طريقة الكتابة، ويسعدنا أن تقدّم دار التنوير أوّل عمل له يُترجَم إلى العربية.
فور ظهورها عام 1953، اعتُبرت هذه الرواية التي أبدعها العظيم سول بيلو أحد الأعمال الكلاسيكية الأميركية، ليس أوجي، بطل القصة - الراوي المندفع، إلا صبياً فقيراً من شيكاغو يترعرع خلال حقبة الركود الكبير، إنه [متطوع بالفكرة]... يقبل أوجي أن يضع نفسه في متناول سلسلة من المشاغل والأعمال التي لا يلبث أن يرفض كلاً منها بإعتباره غير جدير لها.
أوجي مارش هو الهامشي الذي يروي لنا صلب الحياة عبر رفاقه الذين يصادفهم في حياته: مقامرون، ومتآمرون، ومغامرون، ورجال أعمال، وأثرياء... وأصحاب "نشاطات غامضة غريبة".
فاز سول بيلو بجائزة بوليتزر عن روايته "موهبة هامبولدت" عام 1975؛ ثم بجائزة نوبل للآداب لما يحتوي عليه عمله من الفهم الإنساني والتحليل المرهَف للثقافة المعاصرة، إنه الروائي الوحيد الذي نال الجائزة الوطنية للكتاب ثلاث مرات.
نال سول بيلو الجوائز التالية: جائزة نوبل للآداب، 1976 - جائزة بوليتزر للأعمال الروائية، 1976 - الميدالية الوطنية للفنون، 1988 - الجائزة الوطنية للكتاب، الأعوام: 1954، 1965، 1971.
