كتب المستدرك والتخريج لا بد فيها من الاستقصاء وجمع المرويات وأقوال أهل الحديث في الأسانيد المقصودة بالدراسة حتى يكون الحكم الصادر بشأن الحديث صحيحاً شاملاً، ولا يكتفى فى الكتب التى قصدت التخريج بإيراد الحديث دون التعليق عليه ولا يكتفي كذلك بقول صاحب الكتاب "هذا حديث حسن" بل لابد من ذكر أسباب نزول الحديث من مرتبة الصحة إلى الحسن، ولقد شاهدنا في "سلسلة الأحاديث الصحيحة" للألبان، وكذلك تخريجات العلامة أحمد شاكر رحمها الله، وغيرهما كيف كانت تبسط الصحفات الطوال من أجل حديث واحد يتم جمع مروياته وشواهده، وإن أحدهم قد سطر بضع وثلاثين صفحة من أجل جمع ألفاظ حديث واحد له طرق وشواهد عديدة.
