تظهر أفكار وليم هنري بارتليت كلاً من وجهات التقارب ووجهات التنافر بين أوروبا الغربية والشرق الأوسط، لقد أعجب هذا الفنان الإنجليزي، الذي ولد في لندن، عام 1809، بكل نمط من أنماط المباني والنصب التذكارية في المنطقة فقام بتوصر، ليس فقط الفرعوني والكلاسيكي والمسيحي والصليبي منها، بل الإسلامي أيضاً كضريح السلطان قايتباي في القاهرة، الذي اعتبره بارتليت "الابتكار المحمدي الفني الأوحد في أوج ثرائه".
تشتهر أعمال بارتليت اليوم، بسبب قيمتها الوثائقية، في حلب وبيروت أكثر من اشتهارها في لندن، لقد اندثر العديد من هذه المباني والنصب التذكارية منذ أن قام هذا الفنان برسمها، وعلى هذا أصبحت أعماله هذه جزءاً من تراث تلك المنطقة، فقد استعملت رسوماته على أوراق النقد السورية، وعلقت على جدران بعض المنازل في بيروت عندما قمت بزيارتها في عام 1970. وتؤكد هذه الطبعة الجديدة من مجموعة رسومات بارتليت، الموضوعة من قبل مؤرخي حلب حسين عصمت المدرس وأوليفيه سالمون الأهمية التي يحظى بها هذا الفنان في الأماكن التي قام بتصويرها.
