يتصدى هذا الكتاب لبعض الإشكاليات النظرية والمعرفية الخاصة بتجربة السرد العربي الحديث كما يقدم محاولات تطبيقية نابعة من فهم نقدي حداثي يمس جوهر البنى النصية لكنه لا يتعالى على مرجعيات التجربة الإنسانية ولا على أصدائها المعرفية والاجتماعية والفكرية، ولذا فهو يتناول محاور مهمة من تجربة السرد العربية منها تعدد الأصوات البوليفونية في الرواية العربية وانعكاس ذلك على البنية السردية وقضية المسكوت عنه والمقموع في الخطاب السردي والإشكاليات التي يثيرها التظهر الغرائبي والعجائبي في تحولات البنية السردية، إضافة على تجليلات الواقع والمكان والزمان داخل البنية السردية العربية الحديثة.
لقد كان تبلور السرد البوليفوني مظهراً من مظاهر انكسار النزعة النرجسية والبيروقراطية لدى المؤلف وإيماناً بتعددية الرؤى والأصوات الغيرية وبالتالي فهو يمثل تعميقاً للمحنى الديمقراطي المفتوح للغطاء الروائي ولعلامة الروائي بالواقع الاجتماعي وبالصراعات الإيديولوجية والفكرية المحيطة به.
وقد ترك هذا المنحى المتعدد الأصوات تأثيره البنيوي على البنية السردية ذاتها، وهذا ما حاول هذا الكتاب الكشف عنه من خلال فحص الممارسات الروائية العربية الحديثة لبعض القصاصين والروائيين العرب منهم مؤنس الرزاز وإبراهيم نصر الله وإلياس فركوح وإبراهيم الكوني وعمر أبو القاسم الككلي ونجيب محفوظ وعائد خصباك وسليمان الأزرعي ومحمود جنداري ومحمود سعيد ومحمود عوض وغيرهم.
كما تلمس الدراسات جوانب مهمة من التجربة السردية وتمظهرات المسكوت عنه في النصوص الروائية لعدد من الروائيين العرب أمثال: طاهر بن جلون، ومحمد برادة، وأحلام مستغانمي، وفؤاد التكرلي، وعبد الرحمن الربيعي وغيرهم.
