موضوع هذا الكتاب الذي سنبحث معاً فيه هوعن بقية شعب استوطن إقليم عسيرفيما بين جرش ونجران وتثليث وترج في العصور القديمة، وتمدد خلال ذلك جنوباً إلي الجوف وشبوة وما حولها، وشمالاً إلي بيشة وتبالة، وشرقاً إلى بلاد كندة حيث (الفاو) وما حولها، وغرباً في سهول تهامة إلى جزر فرسان، ثم رحل معظمه خلال القرن السادس الميلادي إلي بلاد هجر واليمامة وإلي العراق، وتمدد هنالك فيما بين بلاد الشام والعراق وتركيا واستوطن بعضه بلاد فارس وشمال أفريقيا، وبقي منه من بقي ضمن فرع من فروعه التي استقرت في منطقة عسير وهي قبيلة "عنز بن وائل" (موضوع الدراسة).
وقد اخترت دراسة تاريخ هذه القبيلة نظراً للفقر الكبير في دراستها، فلم يكن هنالك إلا إشارات متفرقة بعضها ذات اتجاه سلبي، فلا زال هنالك جهل كبير بهذه القبيلة وشك يخامر الكثير من أبناء عسير في صلتها بهم وببلادهم.
