لا يخفى على الدارسين إرتباط علم الأصول - بما هو منطق الفقه وميزان إستدلالاته - بحركة الإجتهاد وتطورها.
ولما كانت هذه الحركة - وبحكم إلتصاقها بواقع الحياة المتغيرة المتجددة - تتعمق يوماً بعد آخر، وتتعقد أكثر فأكثر كلما ابتعدنا عن عصر النص، كانت الحاجة لهذا العلم تترسخ وتتأكد.
ولذلك عرف تاريخ علم الأصول منذ الجذور الأولى إلى يومنا الحاضر مساراً تطورياً تصاعدياً.
فبذور الفكر الأصولي كانت موجودة في أحاديث النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلّم)، وكلمات الأئمة (عليهم السلام)، ومصنفات جمع من الأصحاب، قام الجيل الاول من المؤسسين بتوظيفها لإرساء الأسس الأولى لهذا العلم وتعزيز إستقلاله عن الفقه من جهة، وعن علم الكلام من جهة أخرى في فترة لاحقة.
كالمفيد (ت 413هـ) وسلار (ت 431هـ) والسيد المرتضى (ت 436هـ) والطوسي (ت 450هـ) وانعكس هذا المسار التطوري لعلم الأصول في أحقاب مختلفة لم تخلُ من نكسات موضعية وفترات جمود نسبيين، تنتهي سريعاً بمجيء بعض المجددين الذين لا يدفعون ببحوث هذا العلم.
كما في حالة الركود التي عرفتها حركة الإجتهاد وعلم الأصول بعد عصر الشيخ الطوسي، والتي لم تنته إلى أن جاء ابن إدريس الحلي (ت 598هـ) فخرج عن جملة من تلك القواعد والأسس في كتابه السرائر.
وفي القرن 11- 12هـ كانت النزعة الأخبارية هي الغالبة فتصدى بها مجموعة من العلماء توج جهودهم الوحيد البهبهاني (ت 1206هـ) الذي أعاد لعلم الأصول هيبته وسياته.
وهكذا إلى أن وصل علم الأصول إلى ذروة عالية من ذرا تبلوره على يد الشيخ الأنصاري (ت 1281هـ)، والذي يعد بالفعل مؤسساً لعصر جديد يمتد إلى يومنا هذا عبر مائة وخمسين عاماً تقريباً، عرف فيه علم الاصول نمواً وإزدهاراً فاق كمّاً وكيفاً ما عرفه هذا العلم طوال تاريخه ومن أبرز رموز هذا العصر المشايخ الأربعة.
