التصوف بوصفه موضوعاً لهذه الدراسة تأتي أهميته من ناحيتين: الأولى كونه أحد أهم المؤسسات الإجتماعية التي كانت تدار بوساطتها دولة الخلافة، والدول التي حكمت بعد العباسيين، لا سيما في الأزمان التي شهدت توتراً بين المؤسسة السياسية وأطراف المعارضة، وإدارة مثل تلك الأزمات كانت تجري عن طريق منابر الوعظ التي تعقد في الربط والزوايا.
وبهذا التوصيف يكون التصوف حلقة مهمة من حلقات تاريخ الإسلام، ودراسته تعد واحدة من المفاتيح المهمة لفهم حقيقة كثير من حوادث الإسلام منذ أن صار التصوف تياراً شعبياً فاعلاً في المجتمع الإسلامي حتى يومنا هذا.
أما الناحية الثانية فتكمن في مستوى العلاقة بين المؤسسة السياسية المغولية والصوفية، فقد كانت علاقة مثيرة للجدل، إن قسناها بميزان القوى العسكرية، فهي غير متكافئة، فالمغول كانوا يمثلون أقوى قوى شهدها التاريخ وقتذاك، والصوفية أناس عزل عن السلاح ومسالمون، وإن أخذناها بالمعيار الديني فكانت القوتان مختلفتين عقائدياً، فالمغول وثنيون، والصوفية مسلمون، وحتى بعد فارس والعراق الذين كانوا يدينون بمذهب أهل السنة عدا السلطان اولجايتو الذي كان يعتقد بالمذهب الإمامي وبين الصوفية الذين لهم رؤيتهم الخاصة للدين وهي لا تمثل مذهباً محدداً بعينة.
وعلاوة على كل ذلك كانت الخيارات متاحة أمام المؤسسة السياسية المغولية بأن تتخذ بديلاً عن الصوفية، فالساحة المجتمعية فيها عدة قوى دينية إسلامية وغير إسلامية غير الصوفية؛ لكن المؤسسة السياسية تركتها وركنت إلى الصوفية في إجراء هو الآخر مثير للجدل.
