يعالج ابن حبيب في هذا الكتاب أحداث وتراجم الفترة الممتدة من سنة 678هـ حتى سنة 770هـ، وهي فترة حافلة بالأحداث والتطورات، عنى المؤلف بتسجيل وقائعها واستقصاء أخبارها، مما جعل كتابه هذا بحق مصدرًا أسياسيًا لعصر من أنشط عصور سلطنة المماليك، وهو العصر الذي يمكن أن نسميه "عصر بيت قلاون".
ثم أن أهمية هذا الكتاب لا ترجع إلى دقة مؤلفه في تقصي الحقائق وتنظيم سردها فحسب، وإنما ترجع إلى عناية المؤلف الفائقة بذكر تراجم مشاهير وأعلام الفترة التي اختار أن يؤرخ لها، والتي عاصرها بنفسه، وامتازت التراجم التي ذكرها المؤلف بالإلمام والشمول، والتنوع من ناحية، والدقة والأمانة وتجريد النفس عن الهوى من ناحية أخرى، مما يجعلنا نقرر من غير مبالغة أن كتاب "تذكرة النبيه لابن حبيب يسد فراغًا ملموسًا في تراجم عصر بيت قلاون، وأنه يعتبر بحق متممًا لغيره من كتب التراجم المعاصرة، وخاصة كتب ابن خلكان، والبرزالي والصقاعي، وابن شاكر الكتبي، وابن أيبك الصفدي، كما أنه يعتبر مصدرًا أساسيًا لكتابات ابن حجر في كتابه الدرر الكامنة، ولابن تغري بردي في كتابه المنهل الصافي: فقد نقلا عنه الكثير لمن ترجم لهم، كما يمكننا أن نعتبر كتاب ابن حجر "إنباء الغمر بأبناء العمر" ذيلًا ومتممًا لكتاب تذكرة النبيه لابن حبيب، فقد سار فيه ابن حجر على نهج ابن حبيب.
