كان الفلاسفة اليونانيون يبحثون عن أصل الكون في محاولة لمعرفة الأصل الأول للأشياء جميعاً، وكانو مخلصين لقضيتهم هذه، لكن تأملاتهم وافتراضاتهم المتعددة حول هذا الأصل (الماء والهواء والنار والعناصر الأربعة) أدت إلى نوع من الشك في إمكانية تحصيل معرفة يقينية بذلك الأصل. لقد اعتمد هلاء الفلاسفة على الحواس لينتهي الأمر برأي هيراقليطس بأن كل شي في تغير مستمر وبرأي بارميندس في أن الوجود ثابت والحركة والتغير وهم. ليتأكد أن الإدراك الحسي غير موثوق به، كما أن نظام كوزمولوجي تم افتراضه استثنى النظم الأخرى، مما أدى إلى عدم الثقة في كل هذه الرؤى التي قدمها اولئك الفلاسفة.
ينطوي هذا الكتاب على (ملخصات محاورات أفلاطون) وهي محاوات تتناول نظريته في المعرفة والوجود، كما أنه يمكن اعتبارها هي التي أسست لكثير مما تلاها من آراء ونظريات الفلاسفة من بعد أفلاطون في حقلي (المعرفة والوجود) وهذه المحاورات هي: 1- دفاعية سقراط، 2- محاورة إثيوفرون، 3- محاورة فيدون، 4- محاورة ثيانيتس، 5- محاورة بار منيدس، 6- المعرفة الصحيحة/ محاورة الجمهورية (الكتابان السابع والعاشر)، وقد قدم فيها المؤلف كل ما يلزم طلاب الفلسفة والمهتمين بالبحث الفلسفي في العالم العربي للتعرف على فلسفة أفلاطون.
