هذا الكتاب المبدع يرى ان الفيزياء، وهى اساس كل العلوم الاخرى، فقدت طريقها. لاكثر من قرنين، اتسع فهمنا لقوانين الطبيعة بسرعة. لكن الآن، رغم افضل جهودنا، لم نعد نعرف من هذه القوانين اكثر مما كنا نعرف فى سبعينيات القرن الماضى، لماذا اصبحت الفيزياء فى ازمة؟ وما الذى يمكننا فعله تجاه ذلك؟، إحدى المشكلات الرئيسية هى نظرية الاوتار، وهى محاولة طموحة لصياغة نظرية "كل شئ" التى تفسر الجسيمات و القوى فى الطبيعة و كيف نشأ الكون، و بجسيماتها الجديدة الغريبة و الاكوان المتوازية، استحوذت نظرية الاوتار على خيال الجمهور، و جذبت الكثير من علماء الفيزياء. لكن، كما يكشف هذا الكتاب، هناك خلل عميق فى النظرية: لم يتم اختبار اى جزء منها، ولا يعرف احد كيف يمكن اختبارها. و بالفعل، يبدو ان النظرية تأتى على هيئة عدد لا ينتهى من النسخ؛ مما يعنى انه لن تكون هناك البداً أيه تجربة للبرهنة على خطئها. و كنظرية علمية فإنها تفشل. و لانها حصلت على نصيب الاسد فى التمويل، فإنها جذبت افضل العقول، وعاقبت علماء الفيزياء الشباب؛ لانهم اتبعوا طرقا اخري، وهى تجر بقية الفيزياء إلى اسفل معها. بوضوح وحماس و مسئولية يصف سمولن فى هذا الكتاب نهوض نظرية الاوتار و سقوطها، و يلقى نظرة فاتنة على ما سيحل محلها. و لقد بدأت جماعة من علماء النظرية الشباب فى تطوير افكار مثيرة للاهتمام قابلة للاختبار، فى ما لا يشبه نظرية الاوتار.
