كان مصنف تاريخ دمشق أخرج كتابه في 800 جزء، وطبع أخيراً في 70 مجلدة وفيه قرابة 10.000 ترجمة، وفي كل مادة عديد من الروايات، مما دعا إلى أن تربو جزازت جمع المادة على 30.000 جزازة، ومن المعروف عن ابن عساكر أنه كان متمكناً في مادته وشمولياً في منهجه يقلب الموضوع على جنباته ويشبعه بحثاً ودرساً.
ومن هنا، كان تناول هكذا موضوع عملية شاقة ومرهقة عانيت من وطئتها في أوقات كثيرة، وأيام عصبية يخيم فيها شبح الحرب التي لم تكد تضع أوزارها، ولكن ما يخفف عن الباحث أعباءه ويسهل عليه خوضَ الصعاب جماليةُ البحث في موضوع مستنبط من صميم الأصالة في تاريخنا العربي الإسلامي، على أنه يتمتع بالجدة والطرافة، وإن إستقصاء البحث العلائق بين الحاضرتين الكبيرتين دمشق وبغداد ومصادرها وأثر مدرسة بغداد التاريخية على مدرسة الشام يضفي ظلالاً طيبة على مسيرة البحث ويمثل بعض أهدافه، ولا سيما أن المصنف كان مولعاً بجهد الخطيب البغدادي في تاريخ بغداد وآملاً أن يأتي مثله أو أبعد منه شأوا، ولعل رحلته إلى بغداد ومكوثه بها جلَّ سنيِّها الخمس ودراستَه على شيوخها ذي العدد والطول في سبل المعرفة كانت حريّاً بالبحث الإعتناءَ بمفرداتها ونشر تفاصيلها بعد طي الأيام لها.
