تأتي هذه الدراسة لتتناول التاريخ الاجتماعي لمكة المكرمة في عهد إمارة الأشراف آل زيد من عام 1041هـ- 1631م حتى عام 1299هـ- 1881م مع إشارة خاصة لدور الوقف في تنمية المجتمع المكي.
وكان مما دفعني لدراسة هذه الفترة من تاريخ مكة المكرمة، حرسها الله، عدم التطرق إليها من قبل الدارسين من الناحية الاجتماعية بل أن ما اطلعت عليه من دراسات يعتبر مكة والأقطار الحجازية إحدى الولايات العثمانية، علمًا بأن مكة المكرمة وما حولها لم تكن تابعة للأتراك إلا اسميًا، وكان حكمها الحقيقي في الأشراف ذرية المصطفى "صلى الله عليه وسلم"، حيث كانت بداية تولي هذه الأسرة لمقاليد الحكم في مكة المكرمة منذ سنة 358هـ الموافق 968م وقيل 356هـ 966م، وقيل 360هـ، 970م. فلجأت للبحث عن ما دون في هذه الفترة من فترات الحكم بمكة المكرمة في أمهات الكتب في المكتبات العامة والخاصة، حيث قمت بزيارة هذه المكتبات داخل المملكة العربية السعودية، وخارجها.
وبحكم نظارتي على عدد من أوقاف قبيلتي الأشراف آل زيد تمكنت من الاطلاع على الصكوك الشرعية الصادرة من محكمة مكة الكبرى.
ونظرًا لعلاقة الحجاز بالدولة العثمانية أثناء فترة الدراسة تمكنت من الاطلاع على كثير من التقارير المالية الصادرة هناك من حكومة الحجاز والسلطنة العثمانية وهذا مما أفاد للتعرف على نوع النقود التي كانت سائدة خلال تلك الفترة..
كما استفدت في دراستي هذه مما قدمه لي مشائخ قبيلة الأشراف آل زيد وكبار السن في مكة المكرمة، عن الحياة الاجتماعية بمكة المكرمة والتعليم والنواحي الاقتصادية.
ومن كل ما ذكر استطعت الخروج بهذه الدراسة إلى ما آمل أن يكون حقق الهدف من الدراسة.
