الأحساء في القرن الثاني عشر الهجري الموافق للقرن الثامن عشر الميلادي، فاستبشرت بهذا الموضوع الذي ينصب أساساً على تاريخ بني خالد رؤساء الأحساء، ثم هو قرن جد خطير في تاريخ شبه الجزيرة العربية عامة، وجزئها الشرقي بصفة خاصة، فالإحساء كانت جزءاً من حزام الأمن الذي أقامته الدولة العثمانية حول الحرمين الشريفين في مطلع العصر الحديث، واتخذتها من قبل قاعدة متقدمة للدفاع ضد التهديد الصليبي البرتغالي المتمركز في هرمز.
فلما أخذ الخلل يتسرب إلى الدولة العثمانية استغل بنو خالد هذه الأوضاع وبنو ملكهم في الأحساء، لكن الوجود الخالدي بعد قيام الدولة السلفية التي قامت على كتاب الله وسنة رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم، يجعلنا ننظر إلى أن وجود بني خالد في الأحساء كان وجوداً مؤقتاً، فقد كانت الأحساء هي النافذة التي يطل بها نجد على العالم الخارجي في كل عصور التاريخ، ونحن ترى أن الدولة السعودية الأولى اتجهت شرقاً نحو الأحساء حتى لا تظل دولة داخلية، لأن الأحساء هو المنفذ الذي يغذي أهل نجد، ويجعلها دولة خليجية تطل على العالم الخارجي، وهذا ما زادني إصراراً على التعلق ببحث هذا الموضوع لهذا الجزء الغالي من بلادنا، الذي بقى مجهولاً لم تتناوله أيدي المؤرخين بالتدقيق وخاصة في فترة البحث.
وقد قسمته إلى خمسة فصول تناولت الآتي:-
الفصل الأول: قيام حكم بني خالد في الإحساء، الفصل الثاني: بنو خالد والقوى المجاورة، الفصل الثالث: بنو خالد والخليج العربي، الفصل الرابع: الأحساء بعد ظهور دعوة التوحيد والإصلاح، الفصل الخامس: زوال حكم بني خالد من الأحساء.
