تنبع المكانة المرموقة التى احتلها أبو المحاسن يوسف بن تغرى بردى وسط مؤرخى القرن التاسع الهجرى فى مصر من كتاباته التاريخية التى دونها، فهناك ثلاثة من مؤلفاته الهامة الرئيسية تبدو فيها شخصية ذلك المؤرخ الفذ، وهذه الكتب الثلاثة- حسب ترتيب تأليفها زمنيا- المنهل الصافى والمستوفى بعد الوافى، ثم النجوم الزاهرة فى ملوك مصر والقاهرة، ثم حوادث الدهور فى مدى الأيام والشهور.
وكتاب المنهل الصافى عبارة عن كتاب تراجم جمع فيه أبو المحاسن يوسف نحوا من ثلاثة آلاف ترجمة لمشاهير العلماء والأمراء والسلاطين الذين عاشوا فى مصر والشام فى عصر دولتى سلاطين المماليك الأولى والثانية، بالأضافة إلى من عاصرهم من مشاهير المشرق والمغرب، من المسلمين وغيرهم المسلمين سواء، ويستهل أبو المحاسن كتابه هذا بذكر سلطنة الملك المعز عز الدين أيبك التركمانى ويترجم له، ثم ينتقل إلى حرف الهمزة ليترجم لإبراهيم بن إبراهيم بن داود... ويستمر فى تراجمه متبعا الترتيب الأبجدى لأسماء المشاهير الذين ماتوا بين منتصف القرن السابع ومنتصف القرن التاسع تقريبا.
ويلحظ المدقق فى كتاب المنهل الصافى لأبى المحاسن تعففا من المؤلف عن الخوض فى مثالب الناس، وإعراضا عن الخوض فيما يمس أعراضهم، وعدم إسراف أو مبالغة فى ذكر المحاسن والمزايا، مع أمانة ملحوظة فى تقصى الحقائق. وهذه الروح الطيبة فى معالجة التراجم والسير لم تكن فى حقيقة أمرها إلا تعبيرا صادقا ع أخلاق المؤرخ ابن تغرى بردى نفسه، وهو الذى وصفه ابن إياس بأنه كان "حشما فاضلا".
