بدأ المؤلف كتابه هذا من السنة التي توفى فيها والده أي من سنة (885هـ) واستمر في تأليفه حتى السنة التي مات فيها المؤلف أي إلى سنة (922هـ)، ويعد هذا الكتاب من أفضل الكتب التي تناولت التاريخ الحضاري لمكة المكرمة، حيث يعد موسوعة علمية في جوانب شتى من المناشط الحضارية المتعددة، تناول فيه المؤلف الجوانب السياسية والعلمية والثقافية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية وخلاف ذلك، وميزة هذا الكتاب أنه عبارة من مدونات يومية لأحدث مكة وما جاورها، يذكر في كل شهر من الشهور الوفيات والاحداث التي تمت في ذلك الشهر فهو بحق (شاهد عصر على كل صغيرة وكبيرة)، فقدم لنا المؤلف رحمه الله رحمة واسعة معلومات غزيرة في غاية الأهمية، عن بعض القاضايا الدقيقة وخاصة في مجال الاقتصاد والأسرة، فكان كثيرًا ما يهتم بإيراد أدق التفاصيل عن أسعار المواد الغذائية في مكة المكرمة وعن أسباب ارتفاعها أو انخفاضها، وكذا كان يهتم بقضايا الأسرة والمجتمع وخاصة المظاهر الاجتماعية مثل عادات الزواج والطلاق والختان والاحتفالات العامة، والتي غالبًا يشارك الناس أحداثها وفعالياتها، وكذا اهتم الكتاب بالحرم الشريف وما يدرس فيها من علوم ومعارف شتى من خلال المذاهب الاربعة التي كانت سائدة آنذاك في الحرم الشريف.
ونظرًا لأهمية هذا السفر الجليل فقد سخرت جامعة أم القرى إمكاناتها لتحقيقه تحقيقًا علميًا مميزًا، فتصدى لتحقيقه ثلاثة من الباحثين هم: صلاح الدين بن خليل الصواف، وعبد الرحمن حسين أبو الخيور، وعليان عبد العالي المحلبدي، وتم تحقيق الكتاب وقدم في شكل ثلاث رسائل علمية ليخرج إلى المجتمع وهو في غاية الدقة والوضوح.
