حظى الضوء، كظارهة طبيعية، باهتمام الفلاسفة والعماء عبر كل العصور، وظهر علم المناظر أو البصريات Optics ليعنى بدراسة طبيعة الضوء وخصائصه وما يتصل بهما من ظواهر وتطبيقات. وتكمن أهمية هذا العلم فى أن أى تقدم يحرزه المتخصصون فيه ينعكس مباشرة على باقى فروع العلم ومجالات التقنية، وكان من بين علماء الحضارة العربية الإسلامية الذين تناولوا الضوء وظواهره المختلفة فى بعض مؤلفاتهم يعقوب بن اسحق الكندى (ت 873م)، وحنين بن اسحق (ت 873م)، وثابت بن قرة (ت 901م)، وأبو بكر محمد بن زكريا الرازى (923م)، وابن سينا (ت 1037م) وابن رشد (ت 1198م)، ونصير الدين الطوسى (ت 1274م)، وابن النفيس القرشى المصرى (ت 1288م)، وغيرهم. إلا أن الحسن بن الهيثم (ت 1039م) كان له القدح المعلى فى هذا الميدان المهم، وذلك بتصنيفه "كتاب المناظر" الذى اعتبره المؤرخون أساساً لعلم البصريات الحديث، ولا يزال المنصفون من العلماء يشيرون إليه بالبنان كلما تحدثوا عن هذا العلم، أو صنفوا فيه الكتب والمراجع. ومن هنا تأتى أهمية "كتاب تنقيح المناظر لذوى الأبصار والبصائر" لكمال الدين أبى الحسن الفارسى (ت 1319م)، الذى يعتبر شارحاً وموضحاً وناقداً لكتاب "المناظر"، بل ومضيفاً إليه الكثير من الآراء والتعديلات المهمة. وكان الجزء الأول من تحقيق "كتاب تنقيح المناظر" لكمال الدين الفارسى قد صدر فى طبعته الأولى فى عام 1404هـ (1984م) متضمنا تحقيق المقالات الأولى والثانية والثالثة، وها هو الجزء الثانى متضمنا تحقيق المقالات الرابعة والخامسة والسادسة.
