هذه طائفة من الأحاديث عن شخصيات مرموقة في أدبنا الحديث، كنت قد آثرتها بالكتابة عنها، لما رأيته لها من عطاء أدبي غني، ولما لها في نفسي من حب وتقدير شخصي... وقد ظهرت هذه الأحاديث للناس مفرقة من قبل، ثم رأيت أنه قد يكون من الخير جمعها في عمل يضمها ويصونها.
فكان هذا الكتاب الذي أقدمه إلى القراء الأعزاء، راجياً أن يجدوا فيه إضافة، ولو يسيرة- في مجال التعريف بهذه الشخصيات العزيزة الأثيرة, وقد آثرت أن أرتب هذه الشخصيات- خلال عرضها في الكتاب وفق ترتيب سنوات مولدها، فجعلت أقدم شخصية مولداً هي الشخصية الأولى، كما جعلت أحدث شخصية مولداً هي الأخيرة، وبين الأولى والأخيرة يتوالى عرض الشخصيات حسب سنوات الميلاد... وأرجو أن يكون هذا الاختيار في ترتيب الشخصيات موضع القبول...
في الأدب واللغة هذه أحاديث بعضها يعالج موضوعات أدبية، وبعضها الآخر يتناول قضايا متصلة بلغتنا العربية... وقد سبق أن أذيعت هذه الأحاديث مفرقة، ولم تصل إلى القراء مجمعة... ولذا أشار علي بعض من يحسنون الظن بما أقول، أن أقدمها في كتاب يضم ما تفرق منها، حتى تكون الاستفادة منها أعم، وتكون الرؤية التي تنطلق منها أوضح...
