صلاح مصطفى سالم (1920 - 1962)، ضابط مصري، ولد في سبتمبر 1920 في مدينة سنكات شرق السودان، حيث كان والده موظفا هناك. أمضى طفولته هناك، وتعلم في كتاتيب السودان. وهو الأخ الأصغر لجمال سالم عندما عاد إلى القاهرة مع والده تلقى تعليمه الابتدائي، ثم حصل على البكالوريا، وتخرج في الكلية الحربية سنة 1940. تخرج في كلية أركان الحرب سنة 1948، وشارك مع قوات الفدائيين التي كان يقودها الشهيد أحمد عبد العزيز.
تعرف على جمال عبد الناصر أثناء حصاره في الفالوجة، وانضم إلى الضباط الأحرار، وكان عضوا في اللجنة التنفيذية لهذا التنظيم، وعندما قام الضباط الأحرار بحركتهم في يوليو 1952 كان صلاح في العريش، وسيطر على القوات الموجودة هناك. وما عُرف عن صلاح سالم شدته وحزمه في أي قضيه تخص الثورة .

مثل هذا الكتاب محاولة لاستقصاء سعي الرسول الكريم إلى "تأسيس" فضيلة الرحمة في التاريخ الإنساني بوضعها في قلب شريعة كاملة حتى لا تبقى مجرد دعوى أو تعاليم هالمة في القضاء، ولكن من أن يتحول هذا التأسيس إلى "مؤسسة" أو "كهنوت" تدعي حق الرقابة المادية الصارمة على الضمير أو الأخلاق.
كان التاريخ بحاجة إلى تأسيس الرحمة في ضمير البشري، لتصير ملهماً له، ولكن من دون قهر، كذلك تأسيسها في العقل لتبقى منارة واضحة المعالم يمكن لجموع البشر الاهتداء إليها، ولكن من دون قسر وهذا بالضبط ما جاء به الإسلام وجسده "محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم" فالإسلام، دين شامل يعني بكافة مجالات الحياة، ويخاطب كل الشعوب والأجناس، كما أنه آخر الأديان فلا رسالة بعده ومحمد "صلى الله عليه وسلم" خاتم الأنبياء، فلا نبي يتبعه، وقد اقتضت هذه وتلك ضرورة تشريع الرحمة في إطار واسع ومحكم.
