ارتبط فن النقائض في أذهان القراء ودارسي الأدب بالسباب وتوجيه أقذع عبارات الانتقاص وتبادل الشتائم بين شعراء هذا الفن، وخاصة ما دار بين جرير والفرزدق اللذين اقتصرت هذه الدراسة على ما دار بينهما من النقائض الشعرية لبيان ما تضمنته من أخلاق كريمة وردت في سياقات مختلفة من نقائضهما، ورغم أن (الهجاء) كان أساسا اعتمد عليه الشاعران في قصائدهما إلا أنها لم تخل من ذكر مكارم الأخلاق التي افتخرا بها أو مدحا بها قومهما، فقد حفلت النقائض بالعديد من المكارم الأخلاقية التي حرص الشاعران على التغني بها، كالكرم، والوفاء بالعهد، ورجاحة العقل، والفروسية، والصبر، والعدل، والشجاعة، والمروءة...
والحق أن ما ورد في نقائض جرير والفرزدق من مكارم الأخلاق اثبتها كل منهما لنفسه ولقبيلته لهو وثيقة تاريخية لما كان عليه قومهما، اللذان هما جزء من ذلك العصر، من التسابق على إمتثال تلك المكارم، وجدير بأن تبعث من جديد في المجتمعات المتأخرة.
