التربية الأخلاقية هي أساس عظمة الأمم وارتقائها، فما ارتفعت أمة في تاريخ العالم القديم أو الحديث، إلا كان سبب ذلك سمو أخلاق أفرادها، وصناعتهم، واقتصادهم، وإنكارهم لذاتهم، وإخلاصهم في العمل لوطنهم، وانتشار روح الإقدام بينهم، ومن أجل هذا عُنِى المصلحون، وعلماء الأخلاق، وأطباء النفوس، بإصلاح حال النفس وتقويم معوجها، وتهذيبها، ولقد تشعبت طرق الإصلاح الأخلاقية أمام العلماء والمصلحين، فنزع بعضهم إلى التربية الأدبية، والزواجر الدينية، واعتمد البعض الآخر على عقوبات القوانين والأحكام الوضعية, وإني لأرى أن هاتين الوسيلتين لا بد من إجتماعهما معاً ليكون النفع بهما أشمل، والإصلاح منهما أتم وأفضل، لذلك رأيت ان أجمع في كتابي هذا، بين زواجر الدين الحنيف، وعقوبات القوانين، وحكم المتأدبين، ونصائح المرشدين، مع ذكر الشواهد، وضرب الأمثال، بأخلاق العظماء والأبطال؛ لتكون منها عبرة لمن أراد ان يعتبر، أو ألقى السمع وهو شهيد.
