تكمن أهمية الأمثال موضوع هذا الكتاب في أنها مرآة للعصر الذي قيلَت فيه، وتنعكس منها أمور كثيرة من أحوال المجتمع، إجتماعياً وسياسياً وإقتصادياً وغير ذلك، والأمثال هي الناس، تبقى بعد أن تذهب جسومهم وتبلى.
من هنا، انتقى المؤلف "ألف مثلٍ ومثل من تراثنا العريق" مِن كتب الأمثال ومن أفواه الناس، ولم يجمع كل الأمثال اللبنانية التي يبلغ عددها أكثر نم ستة آلاف مثل، ولكنه ذكر العشرات من الأمثال التي تلقيتها من أفواه الناس ولم تُذكَر من الكتب المطبوعة في الأمثال اللبنانية، أما كلمات الأمثال فأبقى أكثرها على لفظها العامي من غير تعديلها لفظاً أو أسلوباً.
وهذا وقد عمل على شرح هذه الأمثال وتوثيقها من القرآن الكريم والحديث النبوي والتاريخ والأدب.
