قرب أواخر النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر، انفتح مجال دراسة جديد وغير متوقع أمام علم الأساطير، فحوالي ذلك الوقت أمكن فك شفرة الكتابة الهيروغليفية المصرية والكتابة المسمارية البابلية، وبذا أمكن الكشف عن وإخراج الكثير من المادة الأسطورية من الظلام الذي كان يحتويها. ومما أضفى على ذلك المجال من مجالات البحث إثارة وأعطاه زخماً مضافاً أنه أتاح استخدام نهج أكثر علمية في دراسة العهد القديم. لأنه-بالوقوف على المادة الميثولوجية المصرية والبابليّة التي أخذت تتكشف تدريجياً-بات من الواضح أن بعض مادة العهد القديم ذات طبيعة أسطورية، وذلك من خلال ما تبين من تشابه وتوازٍ بينها وبين الأساطير التي اكتشفت من المصادر المصرية والبابلية.
وفي هذا الكتاب انصرف جهد الباحث شفيق مقّار إلى محاولة استظهار أبعاد التناقض الجوهري في ديانة ادعى لها السمو الروحاني الأثيري على الحسيات والجسد بينما أترعت نصوصها بالجنس في أشد إشكالية توقداً يكشف عنها الباحث ويفك رموزها من خلال دراسته على مدلولات الجنس في النصوص التوراتة وسائر نصوص العهد القديم.
