قبل مئة وثلاثين مليون عام، عندما كانت الدينصورات تجوب الأرض، ذرفت أشجار صنوبر الكوري العملاقة في لبنان ما قبل التاريخ كميات غزيرة من الراتينج، فتحولت إلى ما يعرف اليوم بالعنبر. وهذا العنبر هو أقدم ما عرف من حافظ لبقايا حشرات، وربما لأقدم أوراق نباتات عارية البذور أيضاً. كما أن بعض الحشرات اللاسعة المحفوظة في هذا العنبر قد تحتوي على دماء من الدينصورات التي عايشتها ملايين السنين.
ويعرف العنبر بميزته في المحافظة على المتحجرات بحالتها الطبيعية وذلك لعدم تعرضها فيه للضغوط الشائع تأثيرها على الأجسام الهشة للكائنات التي تدخل سجل ما قبل التاريخ. هذه المحبوسات ثلاثية الأبعاد تظهر في العنبر وكأنها تستعد للوثوب من قبورها الذهبية لتواصل حياتها السابقة. وهنا يتوفر لكل من الهاوي والمحترف سرد جيد التوضيح للعنبر اللبناني من العصر الطباشيري المبكر، متضمناً سجلات لأول ظهور معروف لعدد من مجاميع لحشرات، وكلها تعود لتلك الفترة الجيولوجية الهامة التي حولت الحياة إلى اليابسة ومهدت لبداية النباتات المزهرة. في هذا الكتاب الأول عن العنبر اللبناني، ضمن المؤلفات معلومات من توصيفات سابقة لمتحجرات فردية، وأضاف إليها ثروة من المعلومات التي وثقت بالصور الفوتوغرافية.
وقد وفر المؤلفان أيضاً خلفية معلومات عن جيولوجية ومواقع العنبر اللبناني، مع فصل متكامل حول أنواع أخرى من الراتينجات والأصماغ التي وجدت في الشرق الأدنى، والتي يسهل الخلط بينها وبين العنبر الحقيقي. وتم التأكيد في هذا الكتاب على العلاقات التطورية المختلطة التي وجدت في العنبر اللبناني، وقسم منها لا يزال قائماً حتى يومنا الحالي. إنه لمن الممتع قراءة هذا الكتاب ومعاينة اللوحات الملونة التي تصور بشكل جميل الحشرات المتحجرة الأكثر قدماً في أي مصدر عنبري.
