يُعَدّ الاشتغال بالتّراث إشكاليّة حديثة نشأت بالتّزامن مع ظاهرة التّأخّر العربيّ عن الحضارة المعاصرة. وما لبثت إشكالية العلاقة بالتراث أن تطورت عقب هزيمة العام 1967، إلى إشكالية القطيعة مع التراث. وكانت العناية بتلك الإشكاليّة مصاحبة لبدايات الوعي بتلك الظّاهرة، ومؤشّراً على الاعتراف بالأزمة. ولم يبقَ مفكّر من المفكّرين العرب في العصر الحديث إلّا ورمى بسهمه هذه القضيّة بصرف النّظر عن موقفه من التّراث ومن العلاقة به.
توزّعت دراسة التّراث على تيّارات ومدارس متنوّعة الأهداف والمقاصد، ومختلفة المناهج والأدوات، ومتفاوتة القيمة العلميّة والمردوديّة المعرفيّة، ومن أبرز هذه التيارات والمدارس: المدرسة السلفية، والمدرسة الإصلاحية، والمدرسة الأصولية الحديثة، والمدرسة الماركسية، والمدرسة النّقديّة العقليّة المنهجيّة الجديدة.
يبحث الكتاب في هذه الإشكالية من خلال أعمال ثلاثة من كبار المفكرين العرب المغاربة، الذين ينتمون إلى مدارس فكرية متعددة، هم محمد عابد الجابري ومحمد أركون وعبد الله العروي. يتضمن الكتاب أربعة فصول إلى جانب الخلاصة التنفيذية والمقدمة والخاتمة. الفصل الأول بعنوان: "بحث في جذور القطيعة في الفكر الغربي (مدخل نظري)"، والفصل الثاني: "القطيعة: بحث في دواعيها في الفكر المغاربي المعاصر"، والفصل الثالث: "القطيعة: بحث في مستوياتها"، والفصل الرابع: "القطيعة في فكر ثالوث الحداثة المغاربي: مقاربة نقدية مقارنية".
