أنشأت المكتبة الأم العديد من المكتبات الفرعية التابعة لها، والتي تهدف إلى خدمة فئات خاصة في المجتمع مثل: الأطفال، النشء، المكفوفين. فضلاً عن المكتبة الرئيسية اليت تقدم خدماتها للمستفيدين الكبار، ومما لاشك فيه أن اعتزام مكتبة الإسكندرية خدمة جميع هذا الفئات، كل على حدة، يعزر من فاعلية المكتبة ودورها في المجتمع.
وبما أن فئة النشء تمثل مرحلة من أهم المراحل العمرية في حياة الفرد، إذ تتميز هذه الفئة العمرية بسمات وميول واتجاهات تختلف كلية عن الأطفال وعن الكبار على السواء؛ ففي هذه الفترة تتشكل اتجاهات الفرد الفكرية والاجتماعية والسياسية في المجتمع، ويتم تأهيله في هذه المرحلة ليكون عضواً مؤثراً في مجتمعه، ومن ثم فإن تخصيص مكتبة الإسكندرية، مكتبة مستقلة لخدمة هذه الفئة يعد من الأمور التي ينبغي التوقف عندها، وتعتبر نموذجاً فريداً ينبغي أن يدرس، لا سيما وأن غالبية المكتبات العامة في مصر لم تهتم بتقديم خدمة مكتبية خاصة بالنشء، وإنما تقوم بخدمة هذه الفئة مع فئة الأطفال في مجتمع واحد مستفيد من المكتبة.
