شَغَلت العلاقة بين العقل العملي والعقل النظري كلَّ من تابع كَنْت، منذ ظهور نقد العقل العملي قبل مئتي عام، لكن أوسع النظريات المعاصرة في الأخلاق انتشاراً تضع هذا الموضوع جانباً لتأخذ بانتقائيةٍ تظفي على أبحاثها صفة التجديد، من دون العودة إلى هذه القضية الأساسية في الفلسفة الكَنتية. هكذا فعلت "أخلاق الخطاب" ليورغن هابرماس ونظريةُ جون رولز في العدالة وكذلك نظريةُ الأخلاق النفعية وغيرها. ومن لم يرغب، أو لم يستطع أن يتبع الأخلاق الكَنتية، لأسباب تعود إلى أيديولوجية أو إلى مواقفه الدينية أو الاجتماعية أو حتّى السياسية، لا بدَّ من أن يعترف لكَنْت، بشكل عام، بأنه ثبَّت أن للأخلاق، بكلِّ بساطة، قانوناً موضوعياً، وأن لها صفةً مميّزة هي قابلية مسلِّماتها للتعميم، وأن أصلها الذاتي يقع في استقلاله الإرادة؛ ثمّ إن إشكالية الخير الأسمى- إذا لم يرد الإنسان أن يتناساها أو يكبتها- لن تُحلَّ إلا عن طريق وجود الله، وخلود النفس، والحرية. وبذلك يمكن أن يَلقى السؤال حول تعيين إرادة الإنسان حلاً، وكذلك حول تعيين عقله مطلبه للسعادة. وهذا هو مجمل موضوع الأخلاق، بالمعنى الفلسفي النقدي.
