يتكون هذا الكتاب من دراستين تتناول الأولى الخلفية التاريخية لبرامج التعليم عن بعد في المكتبات وعلم المعلومات وتستعرض جهود وأنشطة هذه البرامج بالولايات التحدة وبعض دول العالم. وتهدف الدراسة للاستفادة من هذه الجهود والأنشطة في تعليم المكتبات عن بعد بالوطن العربي. كما تقدم تقريراً للوضع الراهن عن الإنتاج الفكري الصادر حول هذا الموضوع. وتقدم عرضاً لأنماط التعليم عن بعد وتقوم بالإمداد بتعريفات لخصائص المتعلمين عن بعد. ثم تعطي خاتمة تخلص أهم القضايا التي تناولتها الدراسة.
أما الدراسة الثانية فتهدف إلى توضيح أثر التكنولوجيا على برامج تعليم المكتبات وعلم المعلومات عن بعد ومدى تأثر هذا التعليم بوسائل الاتصالات الحديثة، إلى جانب بيان قدرة هذه الوسائل على الوصول إلى الراغبين في إكمال تعليمهم الجامعي من خلال توضيح خصائص أنماط الوسائط التكنولوجية. وتنتاول عوائق استخدام التكنولوجيا، وتعطي بعض النماذج لدراسات تناولت تطبيقات التعليم عن بعد إلى جانب توضيح دور أخصائي الوسائط التعليمية ووصف لنموذج تجربة إنتاج مقرر عن بعد. كما تصف الأنشطة التعاونية في التعليم عن بعد والإرشاد الأكاديمي لطلاب هذه البرامج. وتنتهي الدراسة بخاتمة تتضمن النتائج والتوصيات والدراسات المستقبلية للتعليم عن بعد.
