قد يبدو اسم هذا الكتاب وهو "تلاقى الأكفاء" صعبا عند النظرة الأولى، ولكنه في حقيقته سهل يسير، فكلمة "التلاقى" أصلها من "اللقاء" ومعناها معروف، وفي اللغة العربية قاعدة تقول "إن الزيادة في المبني زيادة في المعنى" ولذلك فإن كلمة "التلاقى" تعنى اللقاء القوى، سواء أكان هذا اللقاء تعاطفا أو تصارعا بين اثنين، اما كلمة "الأكفاء" فهى جمع "كفء" وفي هذا الكتاب فإن الكلمة تعنى المتكافئين والمتشابهين في القدرة القوة، والكتاب كله يقوم على أساس فكرة الصراع بين شخصيات تاريخية قوية جمعتها ظروف واحدة وعاشت معا في عصر واحد. والكتاب بكل فصوله هو من أمتع وأجمل مؤلفات الكاتب الكبير على أدهم (1897- 1981) وفي هذه الفصول المختلفة ما يكاد يكون مسرحية قوية عنيفة يدور فيها الصراع الجبار بين أثنين ولابد أن ينتهي الأمر بهزيمة أحد الطرفين وانتصار الآخر، وهذا الصراع الكبير لا يدور فوق خشبة المسرح ولكنه يدور في واقع الحياة وعلى صفحات التاريخ، والكتاب بعد ذلك حافل بالمعلومات الغزيرة والتحليل الدقيق والعرض الجميل الجذاب.
